Gifts of Love

Flowers

Rose   The rose represents both the sweetness, and, because of its thorns, the pangs of love.  The red rose stands for passionate, carnal attachments, while the white rose symbolizes pure, spiritual love.

Lotus   The lotus is a powerful symbol of love, light and life.  It was once revered as the flower of Aphrodite

HoneySuckle   This flower entwines itself around other plants and represents the bonds of love.  It is associated with honey, traditionally an aphrodisiac.

Love Tokens

Locket   A locket symbolizes love firmly shut in the heart, especially if the locket is heart shaped.

Ivy   Ivy was sacred to the Egyptians god Osiris and the Greek god Dionysos.  A sprig of ivy represents constancy, unending love and tenderness.

Dress

Veils   The veil can be the seducer's mask, behind which lurks temptation, carnality and danger.  The lifting of the bride's veil symbolizes the end of innocence and chastity

Fans   In china, the fan symbolizes the breath of life.  If a chaperoned young woman held a shut fan o her breast, she was telling her suitor: "My heart is yours."

Love Knots and Rings

Eternal Knot   The endless knot signifies both eternal love and longevity, implying that a happy union may bring a long life.

Rings  Rings are the symbol of the love that, like a ring, has no end.
